In taking steps to work on my mental health, I have started the year journaling. I have a prompt every day to write about and express myself and have already seen a difference in only three days of doing this.
I bought a journal from the store that was perfect for what I was doing. On the top of each page, it has Topic and Date to fill in. This makes it easy to keep track of my prompts for each day.
After my daughter goes to bed (depending on when she goes to bed) I go to my office and do a little work or play video games to have my me-time. I try to go to bed around 11:00 pm every night so 30 minutes before that I read a chapter from my bible and do my journaling.
So far I am loving this routine. Not only is it relaxing but it gives me a good night sleep because I am not up all night on my phone, which is something that I did a lot.
If you want to start journaling here is what I suggest:
- Make sure to find a journal or a notebook you like from the store or order one online. The one I have is from Wal-mart and they have a wide variety of journals to choose from. Don’t forget to pick up something to write with!
- Discover when it’s a good time to journal. Are you an early bird or a night owl? When and where do you feel more relaxed? Make sure you are not in a rush so that you can take the time to write out your thoughts and reflect on them.
- Can’t think of any to write? I suggest looking on Pinterest. There are so many prompts to choose from. Click here to see what I saved on my Journal and Planner board.
My goal is to write in my journal every day this year. I was having a hard time toward the end of last year with my mental health and will be taking steps this year to improve it. Journaling is a start.
So my question for you: Do you journal and how has it helped you?
